About this plant
The bran of Oryza sativa contains gamma-oryzanol, a mixture of ferulic acid esters with cholesterol-lowering and antioxidant properties. Rice sustains over half the world's population. The discovery that polished white rice causes beriberi led Christiaan Eijkman to the 1929 Nobel Prize and to the identification of thiamine, thus establishing the concept of vitamins.
