About this plant
The heartwood of Santalum album contains alpha-santalol and beta-santalol, sesquiterpene alcohols with anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Sacred in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism, sandalwood has been central to Indian religious ceremony and Ayurvedic medicine for over 4,000 years. One of the most expensive woods in the world, now under CITES trade protection.
