About this plant

The seeds of Paullinia cupana contain caffeine at concentrations two to three times higher than coffee beans, alongside theobromine and catechin tannins that slow caffeine absorption, producing a sustained stimulant effect. Sacred to the Sateré-Mawé people of the Amazon, who call it waraná, the origin of all knowledge. The Sateré-Mawé grind roasted seeds into a paste mixed with water using a dried fish tongue. Brazil produces over 4,000 tonnes annually.
