About this plant

The petals of Papaver rhoeas contain rhoeadine, a mild sedative alkaloid structurally distinct from opium alkaloids and considered non-addictive. Traditionally used as a gentle cough remedy and sleep aid for children. Since 1921, the red poppy has been the international symbol of wartime remembrance, inspired by John McCrae's poem In Flanders Fields, where poppies grew among the graves of fallen soldiers on the Western Front.
