About this plant

The leaves of Melissa officinalis contain rosmarinic acid, a phenolic with antiviral properties against herpes simplex, and citral, responsible for the lemon scent. Traditionally used for mild mental stress and to aid sleep. Introduced to Scandinavia through medieval monastery gardens by Benedictine monks following the Rule of Saint Benedict.
