About this plant

The juice of Citrus limon is rich in ascorbic acid, the essential vitamin whose deficiency causes scurvy, while the peel contains D-limonene with antimicrobial properties. In 1747, Scottish naval surgeon James Lind conducted one of the first controlled clinical trials in medical history, demonstrating that citrus fruits reversed scurvy. The British Navy mandated lemon rations in 1795.
